How to Prepare for Cambridge A Level Accounting

Accounting is cumulative. A weak week in double entry shows up months later in company financial statements, so preparation has to be sequenced rather than sampled. Here is the structure Ram Sir uses with students across a full A Level cycle.

Stage 1 — Secure the foundations

Before anything else, double entry must be automatic. Not recognisable — automatic. If a student hesitates over which side an expense accrual sits, every adjustment topic later will cost time and marks.

  • Drill journal entries daily in short sets rather than long weekend sessions.
  • Rebuild the trial balance from raw transactions until the process feels mechanical.
  • Learn the standard statement layouts by writing them from a blank page, not by reading them.

Stage 2 — Layer the adjustments

Accruals, prepayments, depreciation, irrecoverable debts and inventory valuation are where most AS marks are decided. Each one is a timing question: which period does this belong to?

  • For every adjustment, say out loud what the profit effect and the balance sheet effect are.
  • Practise questions that combine two adjustments — exams rarely test one in isolation.
  • Keep a personal error log; the same adjustment usually catches a student repeatedly.

Stage 3 — Add analysis and management accounting

A Level content asks for interpretation. Ratios, costing methods, budgeting and investment appraisal all end in a comment, and the comment carries marks.

  • Never calculate a ratio without writing one sentence about what it implies for the business.
  • In costing, state the assumption behind the method you chose.
  • In investment appraisal, finish with a recommendation and one limitation of the technique.

Stage 4 — Move to timed papers

In the final two months, past papers should dominate. Attempt them closed-book and timed, then repair by category rather than by question — the method is set out in the past paper strategy guide.
